(139) The impact of maternal depression and fetal attachment on fetal heart rate variability

Objective:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between mental health of pregnant women and fetal heart rate variability (HRV).

Study

Design:

A total of 92 normal pregnant women at third trimester (28 to 40 weeks of gestation) participated. The maternal and fetal HRV were measured by the software-based instrument, HR, by a standard protocol that calculates the time and frequency domain during a rest period of approximately 30 minutes. The sociodemographic and obstetric measures, as well as psychological measures including depression, maternal-fetal attachment, mental health well-being, and sleep were conducted. Statistical analysis was conducted through Pearson r and spearman correlation coefficient.

Results:

In fetal HRV, total score of maternal-fetal attachment scale, its two subscales and self-rating scores of fetus’ moods from mother were positively correlated with time domain indices (sdnn; sdann, p < 0.05). ). Sleep disturbance (rmssd; sdsd, p < 0.01), sleep latency (sdnn; p < 0.05), sleep quality (rmssd; sdsd, p < 0.05), the stress level within a year (sdnn; sdann, p < .05) and age (sdann; p < 0.01) were negatively correlated with time domain indices. The number of artificial abortion was negatively correlated with frequency domain measures (lf; hf, p < 0.05). In mother’s HRV, one of the subscales of maternal-fetal attachment scale (sdann; p < 0.05) and the number of artificial abortion (sdnn; sdann; rmssd; sdsd, p < 0.01) was positively correlated with time domain indices. Habitual sleep quality was negatively correlated with frequency domain indicator (hf; p < 0.05).

Conclusion:

This study suggests that indices of fetal HRV have significant association with the mental health of the mother and mental health in the perinatal period plays a major role in considering the overall health of the fetus and the development of autonomic nervous system of fetus.
