Dr. Carlo is a neonatologist and the Edwin M Dixon Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics. He is Co-Director of the UAB Division of Neonatology. He has extensive experience in clinical research including the design, implementation, data analysis, and reporting of neonatal and childhood research performed by large networks including the Global Network, a project to evaluate the effectiveness of early identification and innovative antibiotic regimens to treat infants with suspected serious bacterial infection in low- and middle-income countries. He designs and directs many multicenter and single center randomized clinical trials and has conducted experimental and epidemiological research. He successfully implemented two large scale multicenter studies in 6 developing countries, enrolling over 190,000 babies, resulting in significant revelations in neonatal and perinatal mortality. Dr. Carlo was the PI of the SUPPORT oxygen saturation targeting trial. More recently, he is focused on reducing major morbidities during early childhood. He mentored many physicians who now have independent NIH and other extramural funding and oversees a portfolio of grants for the 20-member Division of Neonatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Carlo served on WHO guidelines development group for antenatal steroids, neonatal care, and neonatal sepsis.
