Dr. Elkayam is currently a Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) and a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, California. He has served in the past as both the Chief of the Cardiovascular Division and Director of the Heart Failure Program. Soon after his arrival at USC, in 1981, Dr. Elkayam initiated one of the first academic, multidisciplinary programs of cardio obstetrics at the United States, which he continues to direct to these days.
Dr. Elkayam's publications have included over 250 peer review articles and over 80 book chapters; the majority of them in the areas of heart failure and heart disease in pregnancy. His original publications and many state-of-the-art reviews have included a broad spectrum of topics related to the approach to pregnancy in women with a wide range of cardiac conditions. He co-edited three editions of the book “Principle and Practice of Medical Therapy in Pregnancy” and the first three editions of the book "Cardiac Problems in Pregnancy" and was the sole editor of the 4th edition of the book published in 2020. In addition, for over four decades, he has been extensively involved in educating health-care professionals on the management of pregnancy-related cardiac disease both nationally and internationally. In 2009, Dr. Elkayam founded the b International Congress on Cardiac Problems in Pregnancy (CPP) and in 2019 the Cardio obstetrics university symposium, which he has directed since. For his long standing contribution to research and education in the area of heart disease in women Dr. Elkayam received the 2021 American College of Cardiology Bernadine Healy Leadership in Women's CV Disease distinguished award.
