Dr. Shields is an Associate Professor and Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program Director for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Connecticut Health. Dr. Shields is a specialty and subspecialty Board Examiner for the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is the Vice Chair of the Committee on Practice Bulletins – Obstetrics and is a member of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists Governance Committee. She is also a member of the Education Committee for the Society of Maternal and Fetal Medicine. She is the co-creator of Obstetric Life Support, a multidisciplinary, evidence-based curriculum for healthcare providers to train on preventing and managing maternal cardiac arrest. This initiative directly addresses the critical issue of maternal mortality and morbidity, providing healthcare providers in prehospital and hospital-based contexts with essential training to enhance patient outcomes. In addition to her interest in reducing maternal mortality, she is a nationally recognized expert in maternal sepsis.
