Miriam Kuppermann, PhD, MPH, is Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences and Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco. She has been leading comparative effectiveness trials of obstetric and gynecologic interventions for over two decades, focusing on informed decision making and patient-centered outcomes in socio-demographically diverse populations. As Director of Healthcare Interventions for the California Preterm Birth Initiative at UCSF, she oversees a portfolio of studies focused on reducing disparities in preterm birth. Dr. Kuppermann is PI for a PCORI-funded study entitled “Comparing Approaches to Enhanced Prenatal Care to Improve Maternal and Child Health in Central California,” renamed “Engaging Mothers and Babies; Reimagining Antenatal Care for Everyone (EMBRACE)” by the Fresno community. EMBRACE is a comparative effectiveness study of a group prenatal care model with wrap around services addressing social determinants of health (Glow!), developed in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders in Fresno, versus enhanced one-on-one care, among low income, primarily Latinx and Black women. The goal of the study is to assess whether Glow! results in lower rates of preterm birth, improved mental health, and better experiences of care.
