Dr. Shields is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist and practices in the Central California Coast region. He completed medical school and residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio texas and his his fellowship in Maternal-fetal medicine at the University of California San Diego. After completing his fellowship in MFM he spend the first half of his career at the University of Washington in Seattle. After returning to California in 2006 he has served as Director of Perinatal Services at Marian Regional Medical Center. He has been an active participant with in the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) where he has served as a member of the Pregnancy-Related and Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review Committee (CA-PAMR), was co-author of the CMQCC Maternal Hemorrhage toolkits (versions 1 and 2), co-chair/editor of the Preeclampsia Taskforce/toolkits (versions 1 and 2). Over the past 15 years he has focused his work on reducing maternal morbidity related to maternal hemorrhage, treatment of hypertension, and the response to abnormal maternal vital signs with the development of the Maternal Early Waring Trigger tool “MEWT.” He currently as serves as the Physician Vice President for the Women and Infant Clinical Institute within CommonSpirit Health.
