Erica P. Gunderson, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.D. is Professor of Health Systems Science at Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine and Senior Research Scientist at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. She is a life-course epidemiologist studying pregnancy-related determinants of cardiometabolic health, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women, and youth. Her research studies are among the first to account for preconception and gestational cardiometabolic profiles in relation to adverse pregnancy outcomes and lactation on progression to type 2 diabetes in women, and to identify metabolomic signatures predicting future diabetes. These studies establish a strong evidence basis supporting causal inferences for lactation’s lasting benefits on women’s cardiometabolic health. As PI of several NIH-funded R01s, her research evaluates early pregnancy blood pressure patterns to predict hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and longer-term CVD, and racial disparities. Dr. Gunderson is the PI of the SWIFT Study, a prospective cohort of 1,033 women with GDM (75% Asian, Black, Hispanic) enrolled in 3 in-person exams with 2-h 75 g OGTTs from early postpartum through 15 years to assess progression to T2D. Her SWIFT mother-child Study evaluates fetal exposure to maternal obesity and dysglycemia and early postnatal modifiable behaviors (e.g., breastfeeding, infant diet) and future obesity and cardiometabolic health. Dr. Gunderson is a co-investigator on CARDIA, and a member of the Organizing Committee for the NAS Workshops on Nutrition During Pregnancy and Lactation: Exploring New Evidence, and Approaches to Assessing Intake of Food and Dietary Supplements in Pregnant Women and Children 2 to 11 Years of Age. She has authored over 150 peer-reviewed original research papers on preconception, pregnancy, lactation and cardiometabolic health in women and children. She earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences at Stanford University, and M.P.H. and M.S. in Nutritional Sciences, and Ph.D. in Epidemiology at the University of California at Berkeley.
