Dr. Ponnila Marinescu was born in Maine and is a graduate of Bowdoin College. She obtained her medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY, and matched to the University of Virginia for residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Upon graduation, Dr. Marinescu worked as a generalist OB-GYN in Columbus, NY, focusing her practice specifically towards obstetrics. She then returned to the University of Rochester to complete fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. She is now faculty at the University of Rochester Medical Center with appointments in both Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Complex Family Planning.
Dr. Marinescu’s research interests focus on using uterine electromyography as a means for understanding both the physiology of uterine contractions and the implication of different uterine signaling patterns on preterm and term labor. These interests in cervical shortening and preterm labor carry over clinically. She additionally has special interest in maternal cardiac disease in pregnancy and is a lead organizer of the University of Rochester’s Cardio-Obstetrics Program. She additionally has special interests in perinatal palliative and post-loss care.
Dr. Marinescu has a passion for medical student, resident, and fellow education and has been recognized with several teaching awards throughout her early career. She resides in Fairport, NY, with her husband. Her hobbies include sailing, ballroom dancing, and reading historical fiction novels.
