Andrea Barnabas Pembe (MD, MMed, PhD, FCOG (ECSA) is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Before joining MUHAS/MNH in the year 2002, he worked in Sekou Toure Regional Hospital, Northern Tanzania as a Medical Officer. Andrea practice and teaches obstetrics and gynaecology and has supervised more than 25 Master degree students and five PhD students in the areas of obstetrics and gynaecology, public health, health systems and implementation science.
Andrea is involved in the training healthcare providers on reproductive, maternal and newborn health including comprehensive post abortion care, family planning methods, assisted vaginal deliveries, management of postpartum haemorrhage, monitoring of labour and management of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. He has conducted researches with a number of collaborators Nationally and Internationally, and published more than 100 articles in peer review journals. He has participated in developing a number of guidelines on reproductive and newborn health under the Ministry of Health in Tanzania.
Andrea was a Vice Chancellor of MUHAS (2018 – 2023) and a Member of several Boards and medical professions including Medical Association of Tanzania (1993-Present), Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Tanzania (2001-Present), a Member of the Board of Directors of White Ribbon Tanzania (2014 to 2021).
