Associate Professor
University of Cincinnati Medical Center
My name is Kara B Markham, MD. I am a board-certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist (Ob/Gyn) with sub-specialty training and certification in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM). I am employed as an associate professor at the University of Cincinnati where I serve as the director of perinatal ultrasound services and the medical director of perinatal genetic counseling services. At least a third of my clinical time is spent at the Cincinnati Children’s Fetal Care Center, where I care for patients with pregnancies affected by complex fetal anomalies, genetic disorders, and other in utero complications. This includes participation in multidisciplinary counseling with other relevant subspecialists, provision of high risk prenatal care, and performance of in utero interventions as indicated. My areas of interest include prenatal diagnosis, fetal anomalies, maternal fetal therapy, and bioethics. In particular, my primary interest involves care of pregnancies complicated by alloimmunization and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). I am currently participating in a multinational trial evaluating the use of a novel agent for prevention of HDFN, and the fact that I was asked to participate in this trial is evidence of my recognized expertise in this field of study. In addition to my clinical duties and research endeavors, I recently completed Master of Arts in Bioethics, focusing on the ethics surrounding maternal fetal therapy. In summary, my clinical experience, my ongoing pursuit of both personal learning and teaching of others, and my desire to continue to contribute to scientific knowledge will certainly prove beneficial in research endeavors.
