David B. Nelson, MD, is an Associate Professor and Dedman Family Scholar in Clinical Care at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He currently holds the Gillette Professorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology and serves as the Division Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UT Southwestern. He is the recipient of a number of awards including the 2018 University of Texas Southwestern Leaders in Clinical Excellence Rising Star Award, the 2018 Walter T. Dannreuther Award from the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the 2019 Perinatal Research Society 50th Meeting OB Clinician Scientist Scholar award. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on clinical management of preterm birth as well as medical complications of pregnancy. He is a contributing author of Williams Obstetrics, oversees the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists maintenance of certification for obstetrics, and he is a specialty examiner. Dr. Nelson has a passion for advocacy and has provided invited testimony to the United States Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce on the topic of improving maternal heath through prevention and access to care. He also serves on the Texas HHSC Perinatal Advisory Committee. Currently he leads a postpartum demonstration project for Dallas County entitled, “extending Maternal Care After Pregnancy (eMCAP)” to address health disparities of women living in at-risk areas. Dr. Nelson has a passion for teaching, clinical service, and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows in advancement of healthcare outcomes research.
