Maryshe Zietsman, BSA, Graduate Student Researcher, Baylor College of Medicine
Maryshe was born in Benoni, South Africa, though she spent most of her childhood in Texas. She attended the University of Texas at Austin where she studied Biology with a minor in Spanish. During her time at UT, Maryshe nurtured her passion for science and medicine, earning a Presidential Endowed Scholarship and a College of Natural Sciences Book Award. She graduated Summa Cum Laude a semester early and moved to Chicago to work in a paid research position in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). After completing her research employment at UIC, she returned to Texas in 2018 to start her medical school education at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). During her time at BCM, Maryshe was accepted into the Medical Research Pathway, where she completed a year of research in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, under the mentorship of Drs. Kjersti Aagaard and Alireza Shamshirsaz. Her passion for research led Maryshe to apply to the MD PhD program at BCM. She was accepted and awarded the prestigious BRASS Scholarship for the duration of her PhD in the Development, Disease Models, and Therapeutics Program of BCM's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. In addition to working on her PhD , Maryshe teaches other BCM students, serves on the clinic team at the BCM Human Rights and Asylum Clinic, and volunteers with various animal shelter and rescue programs in Houston.
