Rates of hypertensive disease in pregnancy, gestational diabetes, fetal growth restriction and excessive gestational weight gain are increasing in all pregnancies. Experiencing metabolic dysfunction or cardiovascular complications in pregnancy significantly increases the risk for lifelong cardiometabolic disease, including arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. ACOG recommends follow up care in the “4th trimester” for those who experience hypertensive disease or gestational diabetes but actual protcols or guidelines are less clear. Therefore, this course will highlight diverse methods to provide a multimodal postpartum care approach to mitigate long-term maternal cardiometabolic dysfunction.
This postgraduate course will focus on identifying clinical practices, processes, and methods to optimize postpartum maternal health for those at risk for long term cardiometabolic dysfunction. It will highlight the imminent need for and challenges faced to provide postparutm support and care, ultimately mitigating the development of long-term cardiometabolic dysfunction.
