(222) Early postpartum appendicular skeletal muscle mass in Japanese women with gestational diabetes

Objective: Gestational diabetes (GDM) is strongly associated with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and it is suggested that, in addition to obesity, reduced appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) may be a risk factor for T2DM, particularly in lean populations such as East Asians. However, few studies have investigated the association between ASM and GDM. This study aimed to investigate the volume of ASM in Japanese women with GDM.

Study Design: In this prospective study, singleton pregnant women with or without GDM were recruited at 35 weeks’ gestation. ASM was measured using a body composition analyzer (Tanita MC780A-N), along with body mass index (BMI), four weeks postpartum. We compared the early postpartum body fat mass (BFM), ASM/body weight (BW), and ASM/BMI between women with and without GDM.

Results: A total of 118 women with GDM and 426 women without GDM were included in the study. Compared with women without GDM, women with GDM had significantly higher BMI and BFM. Regarding ASM, although the absolute ASM did not differ between the groups, the ASM/BW and ASM/BMI in the GDM group were significantly lower than those in the non-GDM group (Table).

Conclusion: This is the first report to demonstrate that women with GDM were associated with the reduced ASM during the early postpartum period compared to those without GDM. It suggests that not only obesity but also reduced ASM may be associated with the development of GDM in Japanese women.
