Our Process for Planning, Managing, and Monitoring CME Programs and Content
SMFM takes steps to assure its learners and the public that the content of certified activities is accurate and reliable. The content is peer-reviewed to ensure that the following principles are applied to the process of validating CME content:
- Fair Balance—that content is balanced among various options available for treatment and not biased toward a particular product or manufacturer.
- Patient Treatment Recommendations—that patient treatment recommendations contained in the content are evidence-based, are appropriate for the target audience, and that the patient treatment recommendations contribute to overall improvement in patient care.
- Scientific Validity—that cited scientific studies conform to standards accepted by the scientific community.
- Learning Objectives—that the educational content supports the learning objectives of the activity and are actionable and measurable.
- Omission and Commission—that there are no glaring omissions of seminal studies, data, or best evidence.
All live activities in our CME program are developed in compliance with ACCME guidelines and the AMA definition of certified CME, from needs assessment to development of objectives to content development, evaluation and outcomes measurement. In fact, part of the charge of the Program Committee is to:
- Maintain the education standards as set by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
- Guard the Society’s reputation as an ethical and scientific leader.
The Society’s educational content for the Pregnancy Meeting is directed by the
Program Committee to ensure alignment with organizational strategic goals, developed by expert physicians, and vetted for ACCME Compliance with expert content reviewers and planners to ensure that content is appropriate.
